Living in Laredo, TX

Laredo was founded as the city of San Agustin de Laredo in 1755, and was initially located on the north bank of the Rio Grande. The first Texas cattle drives traveled along the road between San Antonio and Laredo in the 18th century, an act which eventually led to the wide perception of the Texas cowboy. Laredo became a city in 1821 when Mexico gained independence from Spain, and was lost to the United States under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo during the Mexican-American War. The city grew from a villa into a booming gateway city with the arrival of the railroad in 1881, making Laredo an important location for travel between the United States and Mexico. Coal mines were discovered in the area, allowing the city to maintain a constant supply of fuel for the railroad.

Today, Laredo is the principal port of entry between the United States and Mexico. The city’s character is consistent with most Latin American settlement patterns, with high-society families living in Laredo apartments in closer proximity to the town plaza.
