Living in Lubbock, TX

Lubbock was settled in 1890 when Old Lubbock and Monterey merged. The new city was elected the county seat of Lubbock County shortly after and more settlers began to arrive to the area. The city was officially incorporated in 1909, when it had slightly less than 2,000 residents, According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2010 that figure was nearly 230,000.

Texas Technical College (the predecessor of Texas Tech University) was founded about a decade and a half later in 1923. Those with Lubbock rentals will quickly find out that Texas Tech has become a major part of the city, as it not only educates young people from around the country, but the area takes pride in Red Raiders athletics, particularly the football team.

Lubbock Work and Study

Texas Tech University is the largest employer in the city, with nearly 5,000 people on its payroll. It is hardly the only employer however, as Covenant Health System, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Lubbock Independent School District and United Supermarkets, which has its corporate headquarters in the city, all have payrolls in the thousands.

A discussion of higher education in Lubbock must begin with Texas Tech, which has more than 30,000 students that hail from all 50 states and more than 90 countries. The school offers 150 bachelor's, 100 master's and 50 doctoral degrees.

However Texas Tech is not the only school in town as South Plains College and Wayland Baptist University have branch campuses in Lubbock. People with apartments in Lubbock have a wide range of educational and employment options.

Reese Air Force Base used to be located about six miles from Lubbock until 1997, when it was closed. The facility is now a research and business park.

Rentals in Lubbock, TX and Cost of Living

As with any city that has a major university, there are some times of year that can be better than others to find a rental in Lubbock. The summer months can be a difficult time to find apartments in such areas.

Statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau show that median gross price for rentals in the city from 2008 to 2010 was $737. One bedroom apartments in the area can range from $350 to $700, according to research.

Lubbock Attractions and Special Events

One can't talk about Lubbock culture without mentioning its most famous resident, rock and roll icon Buddy Holly, who was born and raised in the city. Holly formed a number of country groups during his junior high and high school years in Lubbock and eventually went on to form Buddy Holly and The Crickets, one of the most popular bands of the 1950s. Holly was killed in plane crash in 1959 at the age of 22, but his legend lives on at the Buddy Holly Center, a museum and music venue that attracts acts from around the region.

The city also boasts a top-notch college football team in the Red Raiders, and catching one of their games is sure to be a thrill. There are also a number of museums in Lubbock such as the American Wind Power Center and the American Museum of Agriculture.
