The city of Pearland was incorporated in 1959, and the town slowly began to grow as a community. Today Pearland is one of the fastest growing cities in Texas, and its history dates back to Native Indian settlers that welcomed European visitors in 1528. Pearland’s history as a town began in 1892 when William Zychlinski bought more than 2,500 acres of land along the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. People of the area tried to attract settlers from the Midwest to build the community along with basic businesses. The community grew as a hardware store, lumber yard, general store, printing office and hotel served the residents and visitors of the area. However, because of a catastrophic hurricane in 1890, still one of the worst natural disasters in North America, much of the developed town was ruined. The population fell to roughly a quarter what it was before the storm.

In 1915, another hurricane hit Pearland causing just as much catastrophe, residents fled and the hay and cattle industries dwindled to nearly nothing. However, by late 1930s people of Pearland discovered the opportunity of oil industries and the production of rice created an economically sound community. Dance halls and pubs opened up, and Pearland began to flourish as it did before the devastating hurricanes.

Pearland is only 20 minutes away from Houston, offering plenty of employment opportunities for residents of the community. Roughly 15 minutes away, NASA’s Johnson Space Center employs many area individuals in the aerospace field. Pearland is also right off State Highway 288, Houston’s Hobby Airport and State Highway 35, making it simple to travel virtually everywhere. Other top employers include Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, Continental Airlines, ExxonMobil and Shell Oil Company.

Students living in rentals in Pearland attend local colleges like the Alvin Community College and San Jacinto College within the city limits. Residents also attend Texas Southern University, Rice University and University of Houston Clear Lake just a short commute away.

Living in Pearland is generally inexpensive, especially considering its proximity to a major metropolis. According to Best Places, the overall cost of living is 6 points lower than the national average, food is 18 points lower and utilities are 9 points lower. Annual events in Pearland range from the Pear Run to the annual Pearland Shootout. The parks and recreation department of Pearland puts on events much as the Hometown Christmas Festival and Kid Fish Fest that are great family-friendly events. The Annual Brewmasters Craft Festival is an exciting event with 400 craft brews and more than 20 beers from 12 brewmasters. The event attracts many people from across the city each year.

Pearland is also home to several premier golf courses, such as Golfcrest Country Club and Southwyck Golf Club, as well as three community parks. Centennial Park, Independence Park and Southdown Park boast walking trails, picnic areas, sport fields and fitness centers.
