Rent an apartment in North Central, San Antonio, TX, if you are searching for a family-friendly neighborhood. Located north of downtown, this area is a mix of city suburbs and small independent cities landlocked within San Antonio. It covers a large area roughly between the I-10 Freeway and the I-410/35 Freeways, bordered on the north by State Highway 1604.
The area developed as the city grew, with early settlement in the late 1950s and 1960s. The community really took off beginning in the 1970s and the Texas building boom of the 1980s. Today, it is home to many families enjoying a quiet suburban lifestyle. Yet, its location is close enough for an easy commute to the central city's business district and attractions.
Adjacent neighborhoods to North Central include, Far North Central, Uptown Central, and the Northwest Side.
North Central Lifestyle and Entertainment
San Antonio's North Central neighborhoods are very popular with married couples in their late 20s, 30s and early 40s, many of the them with young children. Reflecting that focus on family, the area is dotted with parks featuring a range of amenities for outdoor fun.
Among these is 900-acre McAllister Park, with four pavilions, a dog park, many picnic areas, baseball fields, soccer fields and 15 miles of trails. The 77-acre Lady Bird Johnson Park was named for the former First Lady. It has a softball complex, community center, picnic areas, a playscape swimming pool, skate park and more. Portions of the Salado Creek Greenway also pass through North Central. It offers paved and natural trails in for hiking and biking.
North Central also is home to Morgan's Wonderland Park. It calls itself the world's first ultra accessible family fun park, with people of all ages and abilities can enjoy the rides and activities.
For indulging your inner diva, there's North Star Mall near the San Antonio International Airport. Home of the world's largest cowboy boots, this mall has more than 200 retailers including anchors, Saks Fifth Avenue, Dillard's, Macy's, and JCPenney. In addition to the usual food court, there's also The Cheesecake Factory. On the western edge of the North Central neighborhood, there's Huebner Oaks Center, a multi-building complex featuring a variety of "lifestyle" stores, for books, games, home furnishings, coffee, a movie and dining.
The North Central Rental Market
You have a wide range of properties to choose from in the North Central rental market. Most properties in this neighborhood are low-rise buildings, many with amenities such as swimming pools and in-unit laundry. Depending on location and amenities, you can find one-bedroom apartments for as low as $550 a month. Typical two-bedroom apartments rent for $750 to $1,200 a month.
Newer complexes with a "luxury" appeal offer one bedroom units for $1,000, and two-bedroom units for $1,200 to $1,600. You can also choose from condos, townhomes and single-family homes, although those rents are usually higher. The average commute time for North Central residents is between 15-20 minutes.
North Central Resources
North Central San Antonio encompasses a large area, including some small independent cities. Residents who are within San Antonio city limits may be part of Council District 8, 9 or 10.
