The communities just north of downtown San Antonio are the city's original suburbs. The area also includes three independent, affluent cities; Terrell Hills, Alamo Heights and Olmos Park. Development of the Uptown Central area began in the 1920s and really took off in the years following World War II.
The area also is home to Fort Sam Houston, a U.S. Army post that is known as the "Home of Army Medicine." Named for the first president of the Republic of Texas, construction began in the mid-1870s. It is one of the army's oldest military installations and is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, more than 27,000 civilian and military personnel work there.
Uptown Central Lifestyle and Entertainment
Uptown Central offers a vibrant, yet family-friendly lifestyle. Equally popular with young professionals and young families, the area also has residents of all ages. Its location makes it convenient for accessing San Antonio's cultural, historic and other attractions centered in the downtown area.
The affluence found in the community encourages a wide variety of dining and retail options. Trendy boutiques can be found in the Uptown Broadway section as well as in Alamo Heights and other locales. The North Star Mall, a destination for fashionistas from around the city, is within the Uptown Loop. It features Dillard's, Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue and 200 stores. The Park North Plaza, inside the 410 loop, not only includes a variety of retailers and restaurants, but also a comedy club and pubs.

The rental market in Uptown Central is more upscale than other parts of the Greater San Antonio area. Although low-rise apartment complexes dominate, there is a growing selection of high-rise residential buildings as well.
