The area's historic Prospect Hill neighborhood was one of the first communities to be built on the city west side in the early 1900s. It was within San Antonio's original city limits, which extended only 36 miles from downtown.
The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower, considered the most beautiful church in San Antonio, is located at the corner of Kentucky and North Zarzamora on the West Side. Completed in 1931, this Catholic church was the first National Shrine dedicated to St. Therese, whose symbol is the rose.
The histories of two private Catholic universities are deeply entwined the West Side of San Antonio. Our Lady of the Lake University opened in 1896. Today it offers bachelor's degrees in 33 areas of study, as well as master's and doctoral degrees. The area's oldest school of higher learning is St. Mary's University, founded in 1852. It is the oldest Catholic university in Texas and the southwest, and is widely considered one of the nation's top colleges.
The West Side is adjacent to other popular San Antonio neighborhoods, including the Northwest Side, North Central and Far West.
West Side Lifestyle and Entertainment
The West Side is very popular with families of all ages and professionals who enjoy an easy commute to downtown jobs. People are also attracted to the community's lively atmosphere. The neighborhood is known as a showplace for Mexican and Tejano culture and cuisine. The Guadalupe Street commercial district is a favorite with locals and tourists alike.
The historic Plaza Guadalupe, a community park and entertainment venue on Guadalupe Street, features a 1,500-seat amphitheater and 12 food booths. The site of several family-oriented events annually, it also has hosted visits from dignitaries such as Pope John Paul II and Barack Obama.
The area is teeming with all types of restaurants. The nightlife options include tequila bars, sports hang outs and live music venues.
The West Side Rental Market
The rental market on the West Side of San Antonio features garden-style and low-rise apartment complexes as well as single-family homes, townhomes and condos. One-bedroom apartment rentals can be found for about $550 a month, but $800 to $900 is much more common. Two-bedroom apartment rents range from $800 to $1,100 monthly. The community is conveniently close to downtown, making for an easy work-day commute.
