Tomball was a center for railroad transportation of agricultural products after state Senator Thomas Henry Ball established the town as a vital resource for transporting goods. The town was later named after him, as he played a major role in developing the area.

There are many opportunities for employment in Tomball because the city is so close to Houston. Also, some of the top employers within the city limits include Hewlett Packard, Tomball Regional Medical Center, the Tomball campus of Lone Star College and Baker Hughes.

The college is a member of the Lone Star College System, and it has the largest Cisco Regional Training Academy in the state and a highly rated computer information technology program.

Burroughs Park is a 330-acre recreational area beloved by many in the town. This park is designed for everyone to enjoy, and The Playground For All Children meets the standards for disabled children to play as well. Residents can stroll down the pathways and play in lighted and unlighted ballfields or enjoy the lake, pavilion, picnic areas and concession stands.
