Living in Webster, TX
The history of Webster began as the homeland of the Karankawas Indians. Their settlement spanned the west side of Galveston Bay south to Corpus Christi Bay, but when a settlement by Stephen Austin on the Brazos began in 1823, the tribe’s existence declined. The two settlements began to encounter conflict on a regular basis. By 1882, English colonists established a small settlement called Garden Town, which was later changed to Websterville. After Seito Saibara, an immigrant from Japan moved to the United States to study theology, he moved to Texas to advise farmers of the cultivation the cash crop, rice. Since then, the Texas rice industry continued growing and helped more people move to the area.
In 1958, Webster was incorporated. By 1970, the population of Webster grew to more than 2,000 residents when there were only 329 a decade prior. Part of the growth was aided by the close proximity to NASA’s Johnson Space Center, where many residents were employed. Today, the economic development of Webster is linked to the area’s banks, hospitals, shopping centers, hotels, and restaurants.
