Three Mormon pioneers founded Layton in 1850 as an agricultural extension to nearby Kaysville. They built cabins on the banks of Kays Creek, Holmes Creek and Haight’s Creek and, with the experience of farming in similar conditions in England, were able to plant crops in the arid environment. A wagon road was established between Salt Lake City and Ogden, allowing mercantile trade, specialized workshops and other businesses to flourish in the region. The city was named after Christopher Layton, who was an early LDS bishop and property owner along Kays Creek in the late 19th century.
