Mormon pioneers first entered the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The Mississippi Saints joined a year later and built an agricultural community that thrived for decades. Originally known as South Cottonwood, the city’s name was changed to honor civil war general Eli Murray. A body of ore was found in the land and, because of the area’s railroad access and central location, the first smelter was built in Murray in 1870. The first settlers were mostly from Western Europe and Scandinavia, but the smelting operations brought in new workers from Eastern Europe and Asia. Accordingly, the largest employers in the area include the Intermountain Medical Center, Select Health, the University of Phoenix, IHC Health Services, 3M Health Information Systems, Intermountain Healthcare and the Murray City Corporation.
