Mormon pioneers first entered the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The Mississippi Saints joined a year later and built an agricultural community that thrived for decades. Originally known as South Cottonwood, the city’s name was changed to honor civil war general Eli Murray. A body of ore was found in the land and, because of the area’s railroad access and central location, the first smelter was built in Murray in 1870. The first settlers were mostly from Western Europe and Scandinavia, but the smelting operations brought in new workers from Eastern Europe and Asia. Today, Murray’s diverse population still reflects the heritage of early settlers. The once-Mormon population has morphed to include residents of all religious denominations. Murray is home to Columbia College Salt Lake City, offering opportunities for local students looking to obtain higher education degrees. Columbia College offers programs on campus and online. With majors ranging from military studies to environmental studies to human resource management, classes are taught with a small faculty-to-student ratio and no graduate students or teaching assistants. Students turn directly to their professors for help, giving the school a unique close-knit environment. Eagle Gate College is also in Murray and offers tailored programming to fit the demanding schedules of local working professionals. Classes are available during the day, at night and online to accommodate all prospective students. EGC features programs in the schools of healthcare, business, health and wellness, design and technology and criminal justice. 

For those seeking work, there are many local business opportunities in Murray with small companies and national brands. Seventeen percent of people work in the educational, health and social services industries. Accordingly, the largest employers in the area include the Intermountain Medical Center, Select Health, the University of Phoenix, IHC Health Services, 3M Health Information Systems, Intermountain Healthcare and the Murray City Corporation. Twelve percent of local residents also work in service jobs.
