Located just outside of the beautiful Salt Lake City within Salt Lake County, West Valley City is a diverse community that has grown enormously over the past few years. The quiet bedroom community gives residents a break from the hectic downtown life, but it is only a short ride to the city center.
Like Salt Lake City, West Valley City is a recreational town. West Valley City apartments for rent are almost always near one of the city’s 20 public parks or open spaces. The city also features two golf courses and a 96,000 square-foot Family Fitness Center.
According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of West Valley City has increased from just less than 87,000 residents in 1990 to nearly 132,000 in 2012. These statistics prove the town’s motto is being lived out in full effect: “Progress as Promised.”
Living in West Valley City, UT
Joseph Harker and his family crossed the Jordan River in 1848 as one of the first that caused a trend of settlers moving to West Valley City. As more families came, the farming communities of Granger, Hunter, Redwood and Chesterfield also began to prosper. At the turn of the century and in years to come, communities in the area saw many improvements. The paving of 3500 South in 1918, the organization of Granger-Hunter Improvement District in 1949 and the town’s first bank in 1956 were stepping stones in making the community a welcoming place to more individuals. By 1980, all the communities formed to incorporate West Valley City.
In 2002 when Salt Lake City hosted the Olympics, West Valley City was the home of the hockey games. This allowed the city to prosper even more as the stadium that was built for the Winter Games, now named the Maverik Center helped redevelop the entire area.
