Living in Blacksburg, VA

Blacksburg was settled in the 1750s as part of the Great Migration. The site was chosen because of the area's fertile land and numerous springs. Approximately 20 years later, a purchaser, Samuel Black, bought one lot in the area that encompassed hundreds of acres. His son later built a grid of streets, creating what is now known as "The Old Sixteen Squares." Many of Blacksburg's early structures and the layout of the original streets are in existence today, serving as a glimpse into Blacksburg's past.

Blacksburg is committed to preserving its past and was a founding member of the New River Heritage Coalition. The town is also focused on growing the arts, and requested permission from the Virginia General Assembly to create an arts and cultural district. Blacksburg is also a collaborative partner with Virginia Tech's Arts Initiative.
