In 1836, a group of settlers from eastern states relocated to the open prairie that would later become Mechanicsville. The village grew quickly when a tract of the Northwestern Railroad was built through the area. Mechanicsville was incorporated in 1868, and today is one of Virginia's most historic cities.

The State Fair of Virginia also takes place near Mechanicsville and offers attendees the opportunity to experience the best attractions the state has to offer. The fair features agriculture exhibits and shows, live animals, carnival rides, catchy music, blue ribbon competitions, and arts and crafts booths.
