Living in Prince George, VA

Prince George County may be best known for the part it played in the American Civil War. One of its early settlers, Edmund Ruffin, is said to have fired the first shot of the war at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, but the town carved out a place in history long before that. The county is named for the prince of Denmark, and it was officially established in 1703.

Today, much of the county's past is preserved in the Prince George County Courthouse Historic District. Residents are invited to live out history and take advantage of everything the county has to offer. The Prince George County Parks and Recreation Department oversees three parks and one community building and hosts youth and adult sports, physical fitness programs, family trips and special interest classes. The county is very community-focused and provides its residents with many resources such as a recycling program, a prescription drug discount card and a robust chamber of commerce.
