The city was named after Alexander Spotswood, lieutenant governor of Virginia in the early 18th century. One of the war's bloodiest battles here killed more than 100,000 troops from both sides. Today, the city has attracted many retail and commercial visitors, and is also home to 13,000 acres of swimming, sport fishing, sailing and a plethora of outdoor recreation for residents and visitors alike.

The biggest attraction in Spotsylvania is the National Military Park for the battlefield of Spotsylvania along Route 613. The park is home to four major Civil War battlefields that attract history buffs from across the country each year. The Chatham home is one of the area's most historical houses on the property and once served as a hospital, headquarters and communication center during the war.
