Overview of Suffolk

Located along the North Carolina border in the heart of Chesapeake Bay, the city of Suffolk is one of the finest communities in eastern Virginia. The largest city in the state, the city is home to more than 84,000 residents, according to information from the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau. Home to a downtown lined with quaint shops and mom-and-pop restaurants, many residents here enjoy a small-town atmosphere but still enjoy all of the amenities of big-city living. People who live in Suffolk apartments for rent experience a unique blend of forward-thinking business ideas, but still hold on to the Southern hospitality that the city is famous for.

Living in Suffolk, VA

The areas around Suffolk were first inhabited by Nansemond Native Americans, a tribe that was famous for driving out Captain John Smith in the very first years of America's history. English settlers eventually gave the name of Suffolk to the town in 1742, and the city remained unincorporated until 1910. The city became well-known for peanut manufacturing during the 20th century after opening the Planters Nut and Chocolate Company in 1912, bringing in a steady flow of economic growth and commerce into the area. According to City-Data, many residents are enjoying the Suffolk area, seeing as the population has increased by 32 percent from 2000 to 2010. Despite being a large city and being so close to the coastal areas of the Mid-Atlantic, residents in Suffolk enjoy a cost of living index that is 2 points below the national average, making it a very affordable place to live.
