A piece of its famous history includes when John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg gave a sermon at his church in the town and at the end of it, threw off his clerical robes, revealing an officer's uniform, and shouted "there is a time to pray and a time to fight." Thomas Jefferson designed the city's courthouse, which was erected in 1795 and is the oldest courthouse still in use in west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
