Overview of Yorktown

Located on the scenic Colonial Parkway, Yorktown forms the Historic Triangle along with Jamestown and Williamsburg. The site of George Washington’s decisive victory that ended the American Revolution, the city is a pleasant waterfront community of shops, galleries and restaurants overlooking the York River. Situated near historic settings as well as venues that host special events and fun outdoor activities, a Yorktown apartment for rent can make an ideal home for you and your family.

Living in Yorktown

Yorktown was founded in 1691. It was a colonial seaport used to ship tobacco to Europe. In addition to its critical role in the Revolutionary War, the port served as a supply base for the Union Army, which captured it during the Civil War. There is still a significant U.S. military presence in the area along with several residential neighborhoods and commercial centers, and today York County's population surpasses 65,000.

The city’s geography boasts miles of riverfront coastline as well as wide open green spaces that preserve its serenity and natural beauty. In addition to the water sports available at Yorktown Beach, such as swimming, kayaking and boating, you can enjoy the panoramic views from the York River Cliffs and Yorktown Battlefield. You can also experience fishing and hiking in several nature preserves and scenic parks, including the President’s Park, which displays large busts of U.S. presidents. The bike-friendly community is situated on the eastern terminus of the 4,232-mile-long TransAmerica Trail bike path.

Yorktown Victory Center is a state-run, interactive, living history museum where period-costumed soldiers reenact encampments, field medicine and historic engagements. The Watermen’s Museum and Schooner Alliance highlight the city’s maritime past and the lives of the people who worked on the Chesapeake Bay. Along with preserved colonial structures, such as the late 17th century Grace Episcopal Church and early 18th century Custom House, the community hosts Riverwalk Landing, an entertainment complex that features live performances, fine dining and numerous shops. Riverwalk is also the setting for the annual Arts at the River festival where jewelers, potters, sculptors and other artisans display their work. The weekly farmers market has speakers and demonstrations of local arts and crafts as well as fresh produce.

US Route 17, known as the George Washington Memorial Highway, is the main thoroughfare and provides convenient access to a network of nearby interstate highways. The roadway makes travel easier to points of interest within the city and connects the community to the larger cities of Hampton, Newport News and Norfolk, which is located approximately one hour to the southeast.

Apartments in Yorktown-Study

While there are no institutions of higher education located within the city limits, there are five schools situated a short drive away from your friendly neighborhood. These include the College of William and Mary, the second oldest university in the country, and Hampton University, a historically black college. Old Dominion College offers 100 academic programs, including doctoral programs in computer science and business administration.
