Living in Adelphi, MD
The areas around Adelphi were first settled around 1696, making this community one of the oldest in the country. The county that Adelphi lies in was named after Prince George of Denmark. Adelphi has always been a community for passersby as well as residents because of its close location to the D.C. and Baltimore areas. Although the areas around Adelphi remain suburban and rural, it still has an urban atmosphere that makes it a great place to live, work and play. Adelphi is also home to the University of Maryland system, attracting many students to the area during the school year.
Adelphi Attractions and Special Events
Since the community is steeped in Mid-Atlantic history, it is no surprise that many of the attractions in the city are historical relics, one of the them being the Adelphi Mill and Storehouse. This two-story fieldstone building dates back to the late 18th century, when two of the town's established citizens, Issachar and Mahlin Scolfield, built it. The term "Adelphi" literally translates to "brothers" in Greek, so it is likely that these two siblings are responsible for the namesake of the town. The mill remains the only surviving milling structure in Prince George's County, and is a reminder of the agricultural hub that Adelphi once was.
