Originally known by the name of Farmwell, the village of Ashburn consisted mainly of landowner George Lee's large 1,000-acre-plus plantation. While the introduction of the railway provided some mode of growth for the area, the Civil War prompted a mini-depression throughout the region. However, the city grew to be one of the largest commercial centers for Loudon County in the late 1800s and early 1900s, with many residents of the city coming to Ashburn during the summer months for a quiet retreat.
