Capitol Heights is a town located right on the Maryland and Washington, D.C., border. This great commuter community gives residents the opportunity to experience big-city amenities while enjoying a quiet suburban lifestyle.
Those who are interested in living in this area may want to research the plentiful Capitol Heights apartments for rent.
Living in Capitol Heights, MD
When Washington, D.C., was growing at a rapid rate in the early 1900s, a Baltimore entrepreneur seized the opportunity to offer city residents a nearby suburban community. He sold plots of land for as little as $20 a lot, and at such cheap rates, many families moving to the town bought two lots. The promise of an electric railway, a dollar per month payment and no landlords were all parts of the advertising campaign that drew new residents to Capitol Heights.
When community members voted to incorporate in 1910, they added infrastructure and services that had previously been missing from the town. A fire department, public works department and other important city services were developed so the town's 200 residents could have the services they needed.
Capitol Heights remains small today. With a population of just 4,377, residents are members of a close-knit and strong community. Much of the land around the train station has been designated an enterprise zone, encouraging businesses to invest in the town. Capitol Heights residents are dedicated to implementing measures that encourage businesses and the town itself to thrive.
Capitol Heights Work and Study
Capitol Heights is right next to the Washington border, making it easy for students to take advantage of the world-class universities located there. Georgetown University prides itself on being one of the leading research institutions in the world, and strives to provide students with a quality education. Founded in 1798, Georgetown has developed a legacy for academic excellence across the country. American University is another school in the area that takes academics seriously, providing students with the opportunity to obtain an undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degree. With a law school, international service school and a business school, most students won't have trouble finding a course of study to suit their interests at American University.
Many residents head into the city not just for school, but for work. Because the town is so close to Washington, D.C., it's easy for residents to commute to work. Some of the largest employers in the district include Georgetown University, the George Washington University, Washington Hospital Center, Children's National Medical Center and Howard University.
Rentals in Capitol Heights, MD, and Cost of Living
Those seeking apartments in Capitol Heights will find that typical monthly rents range from about $1,500 to $2,000. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that the median gross monthly rent in the town was $1,083 in 2010.
Even though some may find the cost of living in Capitol Heights more than what they're accustomed to, the town's close proximity to Washington may make the higher price tag worthwhile. The town does have a commuter train system, which may cut down on transportation costs for those working in the city.
Capitol Heights Attractions and Special Events
Those living in Capitol Heights will find plenty to do when they're not in school or at work. Residents interested in sports will find that it's easy to get to RFK Stadium to catch a Major League Soccer match. D.C. United has won multiple championships, and fans love to cheer on their local team when they hit the pitch.
Sometimes, residents may feel like escaping the suburbs for a night in the big city. Washington, D.C., offers Capitol Heights dwellers numerous entertainment options. Tour the city's monuments, museums and memorials for a dose of U.S history. There are also plenty of theatres, clubs and restaurants for those seeking to enjoy the nightlife.
