Living in College Park, MD
John Smith first explored Prince George’s County in 1608. Almost three decades later, Maryland colonists sought permission from the Piscataway Indian Nation to settle along the banks of the Potomac River. Residents built farms and plantations to grow tobacco, which brought new trade and inhabitants into the area. The Maryland Agricultural College, which would later become the University of Maryland, was developed in the late 19th century. The city was officially incorporated in 1945 when the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad added a local train station. The city grew rapidly thanks to an increasing number of students, faculty and university staff looking to escape crowded Washington, D.C. Today, College Park has many distinctive neighborhoods, including Lakeland, Berwyn, Daniels Park and Hollywood. The University of Maryland is still in town, creating many apartments in College Park that are close to campus.
College Park Attractions and Special Events
The College Park Aviation Museum is one of the largest attractions in town. This unique museum features displays that show the history of flight, from the Wright Brothers' era through modern times. Visitors also flock to College Park to partake in events at the University of Maryland. Whether it’s a Terrapins football game, a student performance or an exhibit at the local art gallery, there is always something to do at the university. The city also hosts the annual College Park Blues Festival, which invites residents to enjoy live music and a battle of the bands competition.
