The areas of Manassas Park were largely agricultural until the 1950s, when a developer acquired acres of land outside of Washington, D.C. to help with the expansion of the city after World War II. After 600 acres were annexed in 1974, Manassas Park became the last town in the Commonwealth of Virginia to become a city. The area has grown substantially over the years to more than 15,000 residents, according to a 2011 estimate from the U.S. Census Bureau. Today, the city is developing into a peaceful, ethnically diverse and young city. The average age of a resident here is 31, according to information from City-Data.
Manassas Park Attractions and Special Events
The biggest attraction in the area by far is the Manassas National Battlefield Park, where one of the most historic skirmishes of the Civil War took place. This hallowed ground was the site for one of the war's first battles in 1861, and housed both injured Union and Confederate soldiers afterwards. The grounds are now maintained by the National Park Service and attract history buffs from all over the country every year.
