During the mid-1920s, Edward L. Mahoney purchased 300 acres of land and built his home, a horse track and stock car track known as Old Lanham Raceway. After his death in 1957, the area was turned into a city by Albert W. Turner. He envisioned a planned suburban community and dug deep into Maryland’s history to come up with the name Carrollton. In 1966, the city council approved a name change to New Carrollton because there were three areas in the state that had the same name.
