The steam-powered Annapolis and Elk Ridge Railroad was built across a Maryland farming community in 1840, which led to the eventual founding of Odenton. Originally nicknamed “The Town a Railroad Built,” Odenton was formed in 1868 at the crossroads of the A&ER and the Baltimore Potomac Railroad. Named after Oden Bowie, the B&P railroad’s president, the rail junction became an important thoroughfare from Annapolis to Frederick. In the early 1900s, tomato canneries were built in Odenton and many other towns in Anne Arundel County.

In 1917, Odenton experienced significant growth when the U.S. Department of War built Fort Meade nearby. Many farmers were displaced when the land west of Odenton was developed into an army training camp. The growth continued in the 1950s with the establishment of the National Security Agency in town. Today, the old farming community is now a business, residential and industrial hub in Anne Arundel County.

Although Odenton does not offer any traditional college opportunities, there are a number of colleges located 19 miles away in Baltimore. Johns Hopkins University, Morgan State University and the University of Baltimore join the Baltimore campuses of the University of Maryland and the Maryland Institute College of Art in offering local students an exceptional college education.

For those seeking work, Anne Arundel County is home to many diverse business opportunities. The largest employer in the area is Ft. George G. Meade, an intelligence training and administration center for the Department of Defense. Major offices here include the National Security Agency, Defense Information Systems Agency, and U.S. Cyber Command, which together employ more than 55,000 residents. The Anne Arundel County Public Schools provide more than 14,000 jobs for local K-12 education. Other top employers include the BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, State of Maryland, Northrop Grumman, Anne Arundel County Government, Southwest Airlines and the Anne Arundel Health System. Approximately 70 percent of residents work in management, sales and office occupations in local private and government businesses.

With all of the perks of living near the nation’s capital, residents in Odenton pay very high rent prices. United States Census Bureau statistics indicate that the standard Odenton apartment costs $1,632 a month, which is $480 more than the Maryland state average. Everyday living expenses are also somewhat expensive in Odenton. The city received a cost of living index of 107.6, which is higher than the United States average of 100.

One of the favorite local attractions in Odenton is Greenway Bowl, the premiere bowling alley in the area. With more than 40 lanes and state-of-the-art bowling equipment, Greenway Bowl is perfect for both league and recreational bowlers. The bowling alley also features Galaxy Bowling with glowing bowling balls, lights turned down low, great music turned up and colorful special effects lighting. Residents here enjoy more family fun at the Anne Arundel County Fair, featuring the fall craft festival, face painting, a children’s pumpkin decorating and scarecrow making workshop, the Maryland State Jousting Championship, antique tractor pulls and much more.
