In 1883, Benjamin Franklin Gilbert received a title to approximately 100 acres near the Maryland-District of Columbia boundary line to develop a suburban community near the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad route. Due to a friend's suggestion, he named the city "Takoma," a Native American translation meaning "near heaven." In just seven short years, the city was incorporated due to the city's rapid growth. Many residents began moving into the area because of its high elevation, a rarity in the often lowland environment of Washington, D.C. Today, the city's unique past can be seen in its historic downtown district.
