Overview of Temple Hills

Located in the heart of Prince George's County, the city of Temple Hills is one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the Washington, D.C., area. Conveniently located near the metro line that hugs the northern Virginia border, it makes sense that Temple Hill apartments for rent are such a hot commodity. According to information from the U.S. Census Bureau, the population is more than 7,800 residents, the perfect size for anyone working in the D.C. area who wants to raise a family away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Living in Temple Hills, MD

Experts believe that Native Americans lived in the hills of southern Maryland more than 10,000 years ago. However, the first European settler to set foot in the areas around Temple Hills was in 1608 when the famous British explorer Captain John Smith made his way up the Potomac River. The area grew in the 1700s, but still remained largely agricultural because of the profitable tobacco trade in Maryland during the time.

Once steamboats criss-crossed the Potomac in the areas of Temple Hills, the city grew even more as the agriculture in the city diversified. However, tobacco continued to be grown here. Once the slaves were freed after the Civil War, the number of farms doubled when many recently freed residents began to move into the area to join the economic growth of the community. At the end of the 19th century, Washington, D.C, evolved into the political epicenter of the country and began to sprawl. After World War II, the suburban commuters by rail, car and trolley were all attracted to the close proximity of Temple Hills to the D.C. area.

Once a wilderness, today the city of Temple Hills is a diverse place where people of all backgrounds come to live. Even though the city may have a 400-year past, it is showing great promise for the future and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Temple Hills Work and Study

Temple Hills is close to one of the most prestigious universities in the country, Georgetown University, which is one of the leading academic and research centers in the Mid-Atlantic region. Part of the community since 1789, this diverse and successful school even bears the motto "on the banks of the Potomac in Maryland" in the school's seal. Students looking for Temple Hills apartments should begin their search for a rental in the area early to make sure they score the perfect pad.

According to data from simplyhired.com, the most common jobs in the area are in sales and office work, management and professional work, and service occupations. Leading industries include public administration, educational, health and social services and professional, scientific and waste management services. Based on these findings, Temple Hills has quite a diverse workforce, but many residents here also commute to nearby Washington, D.C., for work.

Rentals in Temple Hills, MD and Cost of Living

Because Temple Hills is in one of the most sought after areas in the country when it comes to real estate, the cost of living in the area is higher than the national average. According to results from city-data.com, the median gross rent in 2009 was $1,186 per month.

Temple Hills Attractions and Special Events

Temple Hills is a great attraction for many people in the D.C. area because of its trail system, namely the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Trail. This 3.5 mile trail treads across the roaring Potomac River into northern Virginia. Popular with runners, hikers and cyclists, this scenic greenway is the perfect activity for the adventurer in you.
