Overview of Washington

But buying real estate in D.C. has a notorious reputation - which makes raising a family there tough. Luckily, there are numerous, affordable houses for rent in the area. Georgetown is one of the most popular neighborhoods for families.

Whether you just want the space to stretch out and relax or are looking for a new neighborhood in which to bring up your kids, Georgetown has plenty of housing options for you.

Washington D.C.'s heart of academia

Georgetown is located in D.C.'s Northwest side, bordered by the Potomac River to the south and Rock Creek to the East. At the neighborhood's northern tip is the United States Naval Observatory, and just across the Potomac you'll find Arlington Cemetery.

Your new neighborhood won't be far from D.C.'s central business district or the museums that line the northern side of the National Mall. If education and an academic environment are important to your family, having the Smithsonian and National Museum of Natural History, National Portrait Gallery and other public institutions so close is indispensable. Of course, when it comes to invigorating academics, nothing beats being right between two of the city's best schools.

The Georgetown University campus is right next door, which means you get to enjoy its iconic gothic spires and rich architectural character. Plus, you'll reap all the educational benefits of living in a college town - not to mention the center of American politics. Just southeast of your neighborhood is George Washington University, another respected school.

But Georgetown isn't just known for its gorgeous houses for rent or invigorating academic environment - it's also D.C.'s most green and lush neighborhood, spotted with parks and wide open spaces.

Although there are plenty of roomy houses available for rent in D.C., few of them have much yard space to speak of. For that reason, parks are an essential part of a D.C.- native's day-to-day life. While you might not be able to lounge on your own swath of grass, there are plenty of other Georgetown-local and city parks to hang out at. And considering this is the nation's capital, it won't surprise you to find out that they are among the most well-tended and beautiful parks in the world.

Georgetown's rich collection of parks, trails and outdoor activities

Dumbarton Oaks Park and the Whitehaven Community Garden are just two of the largest. If you're looking for a bit of exercise, you can jog or walk along the historic Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, with its pedestrian trails.

D.C. itself boasts 230,000 acres of parks and outside space, according to Washington.org. Just check out national highlights like Hillwood Gardens - which is home to more than 3,500 kinds of flowers - or the Franciscan Monastery Gardens, Potomac Park, the beloved National Arboretum or Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, which happens to be the only National Park site devoted strictly to water plants.

As D.C. is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the U.S. - not to mention the world - many of these parks have historical or informational tours that you can take advantage of.

Does D.C. sound like it might be the right fit for you - or maybe you and your family? Whether you're looking for a spacious home of your own, have some roommates in mind or want to raise your kids in a historic and history-making city, D.C. is an ideal spot for you - and it's hard to beat Georgetown's charm and character.
