Living in Wheaton, MD
The city was named after Union General Frank Wheaton, who defended Fort Stevens and Washington, D.C., during the Civil War. European settlers inhabited the area during the 18th century and used the land for farming. Federal government workers flocked to Wheaton in the years after World War II, causing the population to double in ten years. Like other towns in the county, Wheaton’s identity became synonymous with the larger Silver Springs zip code nearby in the middle of the 20th century. However, local residents wished to have a unique identity and petitioned to have their own designated zip code.
Today Wheaton is undergoing a redevelopment effort with major business growth on the horizon. With famous botanical gardens, large shopping centers and outdoor events, the city has a lot to offer to residents who live in Wheaton rentals.

Washington, D.C., is also a hub for higher education, with American University, George Washington University, Howard University, Georgetown University, Gallaudet University and the University of the District of Columbia, among others, just 12 miles away from downtown Wheaton.
