Living in Burlington, WA
Known as the "hub of Skagit County" in 1909, the area became known for its fertile farmlands from its beginnings in the early 20th century. However, the first plots of the town occurred in 1890 and quickly served the Great Northern railway system soon after, creating a future in farming, merchandising and milling, according to the Burlington Chamber of Commerce. Today, the business growth in the city is likely due to the large number of retail and specialty stores that have been blossoming in the area for around 35 years. The population has increased by more than 24 percent from 2000 to 2010, according to City-Data, and residents here enjoy a cost of living that is comparable to the rest of the country.
