Nestled in the vibrant culture of the Pacific Northwest, Mukilteo apartments for rent typically sell themselves based on the ideal location and stunning scenic beauty alone. Around 25 miles north of the Seattle metropolitan area, this quiet town has everything residents want from a warm, welcoming community with all of the amenities of a large city mere minutes away. Based on information from the U.S. Census Bureau, this growing community has a 2011 estimated population of more than 20,500 residents, and is showing no signs of slowing down.
Living in Mukilteo, WA
The city got its name from Native American tribes who called the area "a good camping ground," and the mantra stuck with the community ever since. After the site was home to the Point Elliott Treaty, represented by Governor Isaac Stevens and 22 representatives from Native American tribes, the first modern day settlement was established in 1858. Pioneers quickly came into the area and developed a trading post, lumber mill, cannery and port of entry since Mukilteo is situated on the Puget Sound.
The community was a quiet lumbering town until its incorporation in 1947. As the decades went on, more and more of the city was annexed by the surrounding Seattle area, and in the 1990s a master planned community was set up in the Mukilteo area that nearly doubled the city's population. Today, Mukilteo is home to a diverse and growing population of residents who all enjoy a sense of pride and tradition, several parks and open spaces for recreation, picturesque shopping areas and restaurants and a history of community involvement.
Mukilteo Work and Study
According to the city's website, Mukilteo has a strong presence in the aeronautical, industrial and technological industries. Since the city has such an innovative culture, it should come as no surprise that the top employers in the area are Boeing, Travis Industries, ElectroImpact Inc., and Synrad Inc. If you are moving into the city to work for one of these companies or if you are planning on traveling to nearby Seattle for employment, finding Mukilteo rentals near the Boeing Freeway is a great location for cutting back on your commute time.
Many students in the Mukilteo area commute to Seattle University. Ranked one of the best colleges in 2011 by U.S. News & World Report, this affordable school offers a full range of graduate and undergraduate degrees. With eight schools and colleges, this reputable university has more than 7,700 students in its downtown Seattle campus. Many students also frequent the University of Washington, one of the most popular and well-respected institutions in the Pacific Northwest. Part of the community since 1861, it is also one of the oldest.
Rentals in Mukilteo, WA and Cost of Living
Because of its close proximity to Seattle and growing, thriving community, the cost of living in the area is higher than the national average. According to information from city-data.com, the 2009 median gross rent was $1,097 per month. However, since the average Mukilteo resident earns more than $35,000 more per year than the typical Washington citizen, new renters in the area should have no problem living here affordably.
Mukilteo Attractions and Special Events
One great way to celebrate the history, culture and community togetherness of the area is to attend the annual Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival. Complete with a battle of the bands, fireworks, hot dog eating contest, tennis tournament, children's activities and an entire "avenue of food," there is something for everyone here. This festival is also a great way to learn about the historical 1906 lighthouse that shines over the Puget Sound and get to know your neighbors.
