Living in Ballard

Ballard, up in Northwest Seattle, has a little something for everyone. Community pride can take some of the credit for that. This traditionally Scandinavian section of the city grew up as a fishing community, and those bonds are tight knit. These days, the working-class vibe has shifted to incorporate a diverse contingent of youngsters. Come to Ballard to check out the Chittenden Locks or browse through the farmers market. Stay to soak up the art scene or scope out the active nightlife. Whatever your pleasure, whatever your style, Ballard apartments will likely make a good fit.

In the late 1800s, Captain William Ballard lost a coin toss and ended up with the land here. Not a particularly promising start to this neighborhood! Things turned around quickly however. By 1900, Ballard was the seventh largest city in Washington. Residents voted to join Seattle in order to gain access to drinking water in 1907. A century later, Ballard is still growing—booming, in fact.

Ballard Lifestyle and Entertainment

While you can still get lutefisk, lefse, and other Scandinavian dishes in Ballard, that’s not all that’s on the menu here. The neighborhood has become trendy, and that means adventurous restaurants mixed in with the lower-key places. You can find a good selection of ethnic food, pubs, cheap eats, and fancy joints. If you want to drink and dance in Ballard, that’s on tap as well. There are live music venues here, plus the Ballard Jazz Festival to look forward to. Shopping in Ballard spans the chasm between thrift and high fashion. You’ll pass bookshops, bakeries, and boutiques all on the same block. If you want to spend some time outdoors, the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks are a major tourist attraction. There are botanical gardens there as well.

Ballard Info and the Rental Market

For those looking into a Ballard rental, options are varied and the market is growing. A 21st century real estate boom has already resulted in 20 major projects near the center of the neighborhood. Along with all these new condos and apartments, you’ll find older homes and other options. Ballard residents range from empty nesters to hipsters. The average two-bedroom Ballard apartment rents for $1,700 a month.

There are a few public bus routes to choose from if you’re commuting from this part of Seattle. A bus ride Downtown will take around 40 minutes from Ballard. Driving is also an option, as is riding your bike.

Ballard Resources

The Ballard Branch of the Seattle Public Library system is on 22nd Avenue. There’s a United States Post Office on 9th Avenue N.W. City residents elect their mayor and nine city council members at large, i.e. without regard to neighborhood.
