Living on Capitol Hill

Known as counter-culture central for Seattle, Capitol Hill apartments appeal to punks, hipsters, artists, geeks, and other eclectic urbanites. This neighborhood gets top marks for its nightlife and eateries. The other call to Capitol Hill is, and has been, live music. Grunge grew up here and the clubs don’t quit (until 2 a.m., at least). It’s not all noise, however—the neighborhood has nuance. With that understood, if you want to live with your finger on Seattle’s pulse, a Capitol Hill rental could be just your ticket.

This part of Seattle used to be known as Broadway Hill, named after the main street through this part of town. In the early 20th century, however, the moniker changed. No one is exactly sure why. The so-called ‘Millionaire’s Row’ is on Capitol Hill, but the neighborhood isn’t as posh as that makes it sound. The post-war period brought inexpensive apartments to Capitol Hill and many remain today.

Capitol Hill Lifestyle and Entertainment

If you’re seeking Capitol Hill commerce and culture, you want to head to Broadway. This main drag collects eclectic restaurants, alternative boutiques, coffee bars, and an extra large helping of watering holes. You can buy a book, get a tattoo, or order a microbrew here, but finding a parking space is another story. Capitol Hill is known for its well-lubricated nightlife. That and dining draw many this way. Also of note is the annual Capitol Hill Block Party in July. For those looking for a lawn, Volunteer Park has plenty of green space. This large park is home to the Seattle Asian Art Museum, the Volunteer Park Conservatory, and a reservoir. Interlaken Park is on the neighborhood’s northeast border and Cal Anderson Park has been rated one of the U.S.A.’s best urban parks.
