Living in Cascade

Cascade can claim old school Seattle credentials. This once industrial neighborhood is one of the oldest in town. It’s got plenty of new life, however, as more and more firms like Amazon.com open offices in the area. These days, a Cascade apartment will put you amidst some of the most exciting development in Seattle. It’s not as raucous as Belltown, but times are changing. Check out the new cafes and bars and wait to see what the tech crowd will transform next in Cascade.

Starting in the late 1800s, this neighborhood came to life as Lake Union saw mills drew in workers. When the Cascade School opened in 1894, its name was adopted for use by the neighborhood. Industry kept Cascade busy through the start of the 20th century with boat yards, a Ford plant, laundries, and other businesses. Mid-century decline lead to revitalization in the 1980s. Now, with tech and life science firms setting up shop in South Lake Union en masse, Cascade is back in fashion.

Cascade Lifestyle and Entertainment

As more and more offices open in Cascade, new restaurants, bars, and cafes match them. Check out the seafood places along the waterfront as well as other creative and cute eateries, like Lunchbox Laboratory. REI has one of its biggest stores here, but there’s plenty of other shopping as well—both here and nearby in Downtown. You won’t have any trouble finding a place for a cappuccino or a cocktail in Cascade, but there aren’t a ton of parks. Cascade Playground was part of the now-demolished Cascade School. It’s a bit of green in an otherwise ex-industrial area.

Cascade Info and the Rental Market

If you’re looking to rent a Cascade apartment, you won’t be alone. This is a popular neighborhood and it’s growing more so. On average, you should expect to pay around $2,300 a month for a Cascade rental. The residents are mostly young and single. There are some seniors and families around, but many are being pushed out by gentrification and increasing rents.

Those commuting from Cascade will want to take advantage of the South Lake Union Streetcar. There are also plenty of city buses one can catch as well. If you’d prefer the exercise, Downtown isn’t a long bike ride or walk away.

The Capitol Hill Branch of the Seattle Public Library system is on Harvard Avenue, and it’s the closest to Cascade. There’s a United States Post Office on Broadway on Capitol Hill. City residents elect their mayor and nine city council members at large, i.e. without regard to neighborhood.
