Overview of Downtown Seattle

Seattle’s Downtown pulses with tourists, shopping, business, and some serious scenic beauty. This is where the famous Pike Place fishmongers throw their catch around. Across the way, it’s the site of the original Starbucks. And that’s just your first taste of Downtown Seattle. Take a peak between the skyscrapers to see the city’s amazing art museum, the architecturally inspiring Central Library, and the misty glory of Puget Sound. If you rent a Downtown apartment, all this is what awaits you. Grab a rental here, order your coffee, and you’re good to go.

This part of Puget Sound has been settled for centuries. The first Europeans to arrive joined Native Americans, who had discovered the area’s appeal long before. A steam-powered sawmill near what’s now Pioneer Square kicked off the modern era in 1852. The city burned in 1889, but rebuilt in flame-resistant stone and brick. Today, Downtown Seattle’s Columbia Center has more floors than any building this side of the Mississippi River.

Downtown Lifestyle and Entertainment

Downtown Seattle runs rife with shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Pike Place Market is a warren of grocers, artisans, and buskers—popular with both tourists and residents. One can also shop until they drop at Westlake center. There are unique eateries like the Dahlia Lounge and cheap eats such as Cyber Dogs if you’re Downtown and hungry. Grab a cocktail at the 5 Point Café or hoist a brew at the Owl N’ Thistle. Coffee here, of course, can’t be beat.

If you’re looking for non-retail entertainment options, Downtown is where you’ll find the Seattle Aquarium, the Seattle Art Museum, the Koolhaas-designed Seattle Central Library, and the Odyssey Maritime Marine Center. If you get some good weather, Olympic Sculpture Park is lovely for a stroll or a picnic.

Downtown Info and the Rental Market

There aren’t a ton of places available to rent Downtown, as this part of Seattle is fairly devoted to business and tourists. That said, one can find excellent apartments, lofts, and other rental options around. Prices are on the higher side. Expect to pay over $2,000 a month for a Downtown apartment. As you might expect, most residents here will be single and professional rather than married with kids.

Downtown Seattle is excellent for those using public transit, but rotten for drivers. You can grab any number of ferries, buses, and light rail trains from this neighborhood. You can also hop on the monorail or the streetcar. If you’ve got your own auto, however, expect traffic and expensive parking.

Downtown Resources

The Central Library of the Seattle Public Library system is on 4th Avenue Downtown. Seattle’s main United States Post Office is on Union Street. City residents elect their mayor and nine city council members at large, i.e. without regard to neighborhood. Seattle City Hall is on 4th Avenue, beside the King County Courthouse.
