Living in Northgate

Northgate isn’t so much a neighborhood as a casual collection of them. Centered on the Northgate Mall, this district overlaps with and includes Haller Lake, Pinehurst, Licton Springs, and Maple Leaf. Most come to this part of Seattle for the extensive shopping opportunities, but plenty opt to hang their hats here as well. That’s because a Northgate apartment is hard to beat for its combination of convenience and cost. From a here, you’re steps to a wealth of major retailers, close enough to Downtown, and you won’t have to spend a fortune.

While the Northgate Mall didn’t open until 1950, people have made their homes in this part of Seattle for considerably longer. Pioneer David Denny built a summer cabin in what is now Licton Springs in around 1870. In the century and a half since then, Seattle spread out to envelop this district. Modern buildings and new developments have joined bungalow homes here as Northgate apartments continue to grow in popularity.

Northgate Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Northgate Mall was a trendsetter. This was the first covered shopping center in the United States and the first to call itself a “mall.” It opened in 1950. Since then, other strip malls and shopping centers have cropped up in Northgate, providing residents with ample retail opportunity. There are plenty of places to eat in the area as well. While many restaurants are run of the mill, residents know about and frequent the local gems. For entertainment, try the Thornton Place cinema with 14 screens including an IMAX theater. There are a few neighborhood parks around if you’re looking for a place to picnic.

Northgate Info and the Rental Market

If you’re in the market for a Northgate rental, you’ll have your choice between older bungalows, newer Craftsman-style homes, townhomes, and modern apartments and condos. Along with continued commercial development, new residences are being built all the time here. The average two-bedroom in this part of town rents for around $1,275 a month.

Commuting Downtown from Northgate will take you about 20 to 25 minutes. Traffic can be heavy during rush hour, however. Public transportation options are decent from Northgate, with local and express buses running numerous routes.

Northgate Resources

There’s a Northgate Branch of the Seattle Public Library system on 5th Avenue N.E. You can find a United States Post Office on 8th Avenue N.E., north of the mall. North Seattle Community College is in Northgate as are Northwest Hospital and Kindred Hospital. City residents elect their mayor and nine city council members at large, i.e. without regard to neighborhood.
