Living in Northwest Seattle

Even for a city without official neighborhood borders, what constitutes Northwest Seattle remains awfully vague. Most agree the designation includes Broadview, Bitter Lake, Haller Lake, and Greenwood. Some also would add Green Lake, Crown Hill, Sunset Hill, and Whittier Heights area neighborhoods. Ballard and other communities along the ship canal, on the other hand, are contentiously included. Using the more limited definition, Northwest Seattle apartments are those found west of Interstate 5, north of and including Green Lake, and east of 8th Avenue N.W. and Puget Sound.

Most of what you’ll come across in Northwest Seattle are suburban-style homes that suit people across a range of demographics. This isn’t a part of the city that draws tourists. Instead, it’s one that makes for relaxed living and reasonable rents. There are blue-collar neighborhoods as well as tonier areas here.

Northwest Seattle Lifestyle and Entertainment

Northwest Seattle is primarily residential with a few commercial strips, such as along Aurora and Greenwood avenues. These areas aren’t hipster hangouts, but the young and restless tend to stick closer to the city center anyway. The neighborhood of Northgate, which spans Interstate 5, hosts the Northgate Mall and its surrounding retail establishments. In Northwest Seattle, you wont have to drive far to find a bite to eat or place to pick out a new pair of jeans. Carkeek Park is your best bet if you’re seeking some time outdoors in this part of the city. The public park includes 216 acres of trails, beaches, and community facilities set alongside Puget Sound.

Northwest Seattle Info and the Rental Market

If you’re looking to rent a Northwest Seattle apartment, you should expect to pay between $900 and $1,200 a month in rent, depending on which neighborhood you choose. Broadview is one of the cheaper areas. Greenwood rentals are pricier. You’ll have your choice of apartments, condos, and single-family homes in Northwest Seattle.

Commuting from Northwest Seattle isn’t the quickest, but it isn’t difficult. Interstate 5 is the main route into the city if you’re driving yourself. Public buses, some express, will also take you Downtown if you’d rather let someone else do the driving.

Northwest Seattle Resources

There are branches of the Seattle Public Library system in Broadview, Greenwood, and another in Ballard. You can find a United States Post Office on North 145th Street. Northwest Hospital is in Northwest Seattle. City residents elect their mayor and nine city council members at large, i.e. without regard to neighborhood.
