South Lake Union was once one of Seattle’s industrial hubs. It still is, in a modern fashion. Since the city got started, timber mills here gave rise to furniture makers and they in turn stepped aside for Boeing’s first airplane factory. Today, the local movers and shakers are more high tech. South Lake Union is where Amazon.com has consolidated its offices. Joining that behemoth are life science firms, web startups, and all the whiz kids they can keep busy. Old industrial streets here now hold cutting edge industries, and new South Lake Union apartments stay full of Gen Y geniuses.
If you’re renting a South Lake Union apartment, you’ll live in a progressive neighborhood—even by Seattle standards. Development here is fast paced and so is the pace of life. That doesn’t mean it’s loud and up all night, however; it means South Lake Union is on the move and you better keep up.
South Lake Union Lifestyle and Entertainment
With all the offices opening in South Lake Union, the neighborhood has become rich in cafes, restaurants, and coffee shops. The lunch trade is particularly booming, with everything from tacos to bratwurst on order. There are a handful of bars around, but it’s not a major nightlife area. Shopping in South Lake Union ranges from furniture to fine art. If you’re looking for a new pair of socks or a tub of ice cream, you may need to wander farther afield. For a taste of nature, Lake Union Park has a model boat pond, trails, and historic vessels on display. Denny Park on the edge of Downtown is also a good place to picnic.

South Lake Union’s old employee housing has mostly slipped into history. Instead, you’ll find modern high-rise apartments and some other interesting rentals around here. South Lake Union is increasingly with popular with young professionals and singles. There are some families living in the neighborhood, but most tend to feel more fulfilled elsewhere.
