Overview of University District

University Way N.E. is the main drag in the University District. Everyone calls it “the Ave.” Along this artery, you’ll find everything from bars to bookstores, taquerias to tattoo parlors. Many of the restaurants cater to a student budget, but you can head to University Village for a more upscale evening. Take care when walking after dark, however. There are unsavory elements—known as “Ave rats”—that might occasionally spoil an evening.

If you’re looking for some entertainment in the University District, the Burke Museum focuses on natural history. The Henry Art Gallery here is one of the largest contemporary art galleries in the state. To spend some time in nature, check out Ravenna Park. It contains ball fields, a playground, a secluded ravine with trails, and more.

University District Info and the Rental Market

Most of the housing in this part of town comes in the form of apartments and shared rentals. That’s a result of the high numbers of students living here. As you move farther away from campus, you’ll find more single-family homes and quieter streets. You’ll also be more likely to live near families and professors than fraternities. The average two-bedroom University District apartment rents for $1,500 a month.

If you need to get around Seattle from the University District, bus service from here is excellent. You can take advantage of express service Downtown and take less frequently running routes out to distant suburbs. Be aware that some lines don’t run on weekends. If you’re a driver, parking is expensive on campus.

University District Resources

The University Branch of the Seattle Public Library system is on Roosevelt Way N.E. There’s a United States Post Office on the Ave and another on 25th Avenue N.E. The University of Washington operates the UW Medical Center. There’s also the Seattle Children’s Hospital on Sand Point Way N.E. City residents elect their mayor and nine city council members at large, i.e. without regard to neighborhood.
