Overview of Sunnyside

Named an "All American City" in 1979, Sunnyside, WA, is centrally located in Yakima County. Roughly 2 hours from Seattle by car, the city retains much of its original rural charm with unique events like the annual Lighted Farm Implement Parade and the Darigold Dairy Fair, known for its colorful decor and whimsical decorations. With convenient access to the I-82, it's easy to get where you want to go. The city itself is known for its small town feel while still offering easy access to everything from prime shopping destinations to delightful neighborhood cafes. Rent also tends to be significantly less than what you would pay in larger cities in the area, most notably Seattle.

Living in Sunnyside

Incorporated in 1902, the town received its named from W.H. Cline, a local merchant. Soon after the city was incorporated, the Dunkards, a German Baptist Progressive Brethren from South Dakota, formed the Christian Cooperative Colony in Sunnyside, resulting in a population boom and substantial development throughout the region.

The city is a thriving farm community today with nearly 16,000 residents scattered throughout the area. The downtown area is an interesting mix of local charm with small shops and cafes along with prime attractions like the Sunnyside Historical Museum. The Sunnyside Library is the second largest in the Yakima Valley Regional Library System, noted for its extensive Spanish language collection. Neighborhood amenities include parks and playgrounds.

Adventure seekers don't have to go to enjoy the great outdoors. Mount Adams, the highest point in Yakima County, is an excellent spot for hiking and camping. Mountain goats can be seen near the glaciers of Great Rocks Wilderness. During the summer months, many locals go fishing along the banks of any of the six rivers in the area, including the target="_blank">Yakima River and the American River. Weekend adventure seekers can conveniently rent or purchase boating and camping equipment throughout the area.

Most sports fans in the area cheer for Seattle teams, including the Seahawks and Mariners. The Lincoln School Building is one of the oldest remaining structures in town, currently serving as the administration building for the city's school district, which includes one high school, two middle schools and five elementary schools, many located within residential neighborhood areas. There are three private schools in the area.

Due to the rural nature of the community, most people living and working in the area tend to drive. Some of the major roadways and routes in the area include Hanford Road, Sunnyside Mabton Road and Interstate 82.

Apartments in Sunnyside-Study

Yakima Valley Community College, about 30 miles from the downtown area, is the nearest higher learning institution. Students who happen to be apartment renters can easily commute since the city has many well-maintained roadways. It's not unusual for apartment renters from the Seattle area to gravitate towards the Yakima County area to get a break on rent while still maintaining convenient access back and forth to Seattle. Most of the major universities, colleges, technical institutes and art institutes are located in the Seattle area, about 2 hours away by car, including the University of Washington and Seattle Pacific University.

Employment opportunities directly within Yakima County tend to be related to the agriculture industry, specifically farming and food processing. Apartment renters can still enjoy living in the community while conveniently commuting to nearby towns to seek work in thriving sectors including state and local government, manufacturing and healthcare. Farm workers from nearby areas may rent an affordable apartment directly in Sunnyside during the growing season.
