Named to honor Colonel Thomas Bryan Martin, Martinsburg was founded in 1778 by General Adam Stephen. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad built a track to Martinsburg in 1842, which allowed the city to gain momentum and become incorporated by the West Virginia State Legislature in 1868. Today, Martinsburg is recognized as one of the fastest-growing cities in West Virginia.
