Overview of Morgantown

Morgantown, located on the banks of the Monongalia River, has been named one of the "Top 20 Best College Towns" by Business Insider and ranks number one on Movoto Blog’s "Ten Most Exciting Places in West Virginia." One quality that truly distinguishes Morgantown is the Personal Rapid System that connects the downtown area with the three campuses of West Virginia University. This system is the oldest and most extensive in the world.

Living in Morgantown

The city that is now known as Morgantown was settled by Zackquill Morgan in 1772. By 1838, the town boasted about 700 residents and on June 20, 1863 became part of the newly formed state of West Virginia.

These days, the city has just under 30,000 permanent residents living within its borders, but during the school year, the population almost doubles with about 26,000 additional people flocking to the area.

If you are looking for an apartment in this area, you will have a number of art and cultural activities at your disposal. The Metropolitan Theatre, Monongalia Arts Center and WVU Coliseum are all excellent places to find a show or concert. There are also a number of outdoor activities to take in, such as a trip to the Core Arboretum, climbing Dorsey Knob and hiking along the Caperton and Deckers Creek Rail-Trails.

Renters who have families will also find a number of local options for kids too. During the warm summer months, there are two municipal pools in the city, Krepps and Marilla. Marilla Pool even has waterslides that the kids will love. The Morgantown History Museum has a number of programs for kids, and the Children’s Discovery Museum of Morgantown offers many hand's on exhibits that teach as well as entertain.

There are a number of options in the neighborhood for dining, and the city is known for its restaurants and bars. Black Bean Burritos is a popular spot for vegetarians and meat eaters alike, and the restaurant received the "Certificate of Excellence 2014" from TripAdvisor. Beer and wine lovers will also find amazing options in the city especially at the Mountain State Brewing Company and The Wine Bar At Vintner Valley.

Apartment dwellers will find that a car is needed if you want to explore the outer edges of the city. Thanks to the Mountain Line Transit Authority bus system and the Personal Rapid System, using public transportation throughout the neighborhood is quite easy. The city is connected to Interstates 79 and 68, and the closest major city is Pittsburgh, about 75 miles to the north.
