Named after Benjamin Franklin, the city was one of the two towns formed from the split of Kinnickinnic in 1838. Originally, Franklin was covered with thick timber, such as walnut, butternut and hickory, which meant there was also an abundance of wild animals. Bears, panthers, wolves, wildcats and deer were the most common species in the area.

Early town officials in Franklin fought against annexation to Milwaukee. Franklin was organized as a township in 1841, and it consisted of 36 miles. Franklin has always remained a rural town, but in fear that Milwaukee would try again to annex it, officials prompted to incorporate it as a city in 1956 after much debate.

The St. Martin’s Fair is an annual event held on the first Monday of each month. This event takes place on St. Martin’s Road from W. Forest Home Avenue to W. Church Street. Residents purchase good from vendors selling a diverse array of goods, including clothing, hardware and household items, pet supplies, cleaning supplies, antiques, flowers, fruits and vegetables, prepared food, furniture and much more. The event also boasts live entertainment each week.

Franklin also hosts summer concerts in the park in the Lions Legend Park Band Shell for free on Sundays. Other community events include the Franklin Civic Celebration, Arbor Day Celebration and National Night Out.
