Living in Franklin, WI

Named after Benjamin Franklin, the city was one of the two towns formed from the split of Kinnickinnic in 1838. Franklin was surrounded by Greenfield to the north, Oak Creek to the east and Racine and Waukesha Counties to the south and west. Originally, Franklin was covered with thick timber, such as walnut, butternut and hickory, which meant there was also an abundance of wild animals. Bears, panthers, wolves, wildcats and deer were the most common species in the area.

Early town officials in Franklin fought against annexation to Milwaukee. Franklin was organized as a township in 1841, and it consisted of 36 miles. Franklin has always remained a rural town, but in fear that Milwaukee would try again to annex it, officials prompted to incorporate it as a city in 1956 after much debate.
