Green Bay, WI
Overview of Green Bay
Though the city is best known for its association with a storied NFL franchise, Green Bay has so much more to offer future Wisconsin residents. Located at a sub-basin of Lake Michigan, the metropolis is home to a population of 104,266, as of the 2010 Census, all proud of the unofficial nickname of the "Titletown, USA" it has acquired due to the success of the Packers football team.
With quick access to one of the Great Lakes and plenty of outdoor activities for adventurous individuals and families, it is no wonder why individuals of all ages are scouring the area for Green Bay apartments for rent. Taking in a football game is enjoyable for many people and the city of Milwaukee is less than a two hour drive for those who may want to see another major metropolis in Wisconsin.
Living in Green Bay, WI
Though the area had long been inhabited by Native Americans, the area was discovered by the Europeans and famed explorer Samuel de Champlain sent an envoy to the region after hearing of its "riches" in the mid-17th century. After this initial settlement, the area was contested by the French and English until the divisive war between the two countries from 1754-1760. Eventually, the British took control of the area.
Several forts were built at the site, including Fort Howard during the Revolutionary War, but it was not until Wisconsin became a state in the mid-1800s that the city of Green Bay was incorporated.
The area became a haven for a number of European immigrant groups in the years following its incorporation, and it grew as an industrial and trading center during the expansion of American industry in the mid-19th century. Much of this history can still be seen, and much of the city retains this commerce-based feel.
Finding apartments in Green Bay can give any future resident a taste of the region's history, as railroads, ports and a harbor still exist in the city. The importance of water to the metropolis has continued to the present day, and much of the activity in the region takes place near this vital resource.
Green Bay Work and Study
The medical industry is one of the most prominent sectors in the region, and Green Bay and the surrounding area are home to a number of hospitals, insurance company offices and associated facilities. Georgia-Pacific Corporation, a manufacturer of paper and tissue products, employs more than 2,300 people, and allows the area to maintain its roots in the timber and paper industry.
The city is not only home to a number of medical facilities and hospitals, but the area is also where the University of Wisconsin's Green Bay campus is located. More than 6,700 students are enrolled in the school, and apartments near Green Bay may be occupied by many of these individuals.
Rentals in Green Bay, WI and Cost of Living
Finding rentals in Green Bay may be difficult, depending on where one wants to live within the city. Residences near the water or highway could command a higher price than on the outskirts of town. The median gross rent in Green Bay is $615 a month, according to the 2010 Census.
Green Bay Attractions and Special Events
Going to a Green Bay Packers game is something that every resident should do at least once, as smelling the famous sausages, tasting beer from some of the country's oldest breweries and taking in the sights and sounds surrounded by some of the most diehard sports fans in the country make for a memorable experience.
For those who would rather spend their time outdoors away from the roars of Lambeau Field, the city has a number of outdoor attractions available. A wildlife sanctuary provides hunting opportunities and sightseeing options for residents, while the waters of Lake Michigan make it a perfect place for those looking to boat or fish to relax on the weekends.
