Overview of La Crosse

Nestled in a picturesque setting between high bluffs and the Mississippi River, La Crosse boasts a rich history and modern amenities without the hustle and bustle of larger cities. As the region’s cultural, medical and economic hub, it is frequently recognized for its education, well-being, health and overall quality of life. Any one of the many La Crosse apartments available for rent will place you, your family and students in the middle of all that the city has to offer.

Living in La Crosse

French fur traders first came to the area in the late 17th century. Lt. Zebulon Pike, for whom Pike’s Peak is named, led an expedition to the area in 1805 and gave it the name Prairie La Crosse. The name originates from the bishop’s crozier-shaped sticks with which Native Americans played a game. The first permanent settlement, established in 1841, was incorporated as a city in 1856. The city’s location made it a center for the fur trading, mining and lumber industries. It remains the largest metropolitan area in western Wisconsin.

Today, the city has a diverse population surpassing 51,000 residents. The community features several distinct neighborhoods, such as Mud City, Washburn and Hungary Point as well as College Park, Old Towne and the Northside. Interstate 90 and a network of state highways make travel to points of interest in and around the city easier.

Discover the spectacular natural surroundings by hiking and mountain biking during the warmer months and by ski, snowshoe or snowmobile in the winter. Anglers, boaters and rafters can explore the area’s rivers and streams. Families enjoy the nature trails, beaches, ball fields, picnic facilities and playgrounds in Erikson, Myrick and Pettibone Parks as well as 42 other parks and recreation centers within the city. You can also take in a home game for the Loggers, a summer collegiate-level baseball team.

The historic downtown features unique shops, museums and fine art galleries. The La Crosse Center Arena and the Pump House Regional Arts Center host various exhibits and live performances. A variety of cultural celebrations, including Oktoberfest, Riverfest and Freedom Fest are held throughout the year.

In terms of public transportation, the city of La Crosse is served by the Municipal Transit Utility (MTU).
