Migrating forest tribes were removed to Kansas by the United States Army in the mid-19th century. Lake Geneva was also a site on the reverse route for slaves escaping Eastern Kentucky and Southern Illinois. After the Civil War, the town became a popular destination for Chicago families and their summer homes. Lake Geneva became known as the "Newport of the West" as more and more families built mansions along the lakeshore. Today, Lake Geneva is still filled with homes from this era, representing the town’s Victorian-era history.
