The Menomonie area, though inhabited by Native Americans throughout much of its history, was first settled by European Americans in 1822 when Harding Perkins erected a small local lumber mill. Over time, disputes with local Native Americans and numerous weather-related events caused the mill to close. Lumber continued to play an important role in the local economy as numerous companies set up shop in the area: The Wisconsin Milling Company and Knapp, Stout & Company both operated mills in the Menomonie area.
