Overview of New Richmond

Home to more than 8,300 people, New Richmond, Wis., is a quiet country city located about 40 miles northwest of Minnesota's Twin Cities. Known as "The City Beautiful," New Richmond was founded in 1857 and is located in the breathtaking St. Croix Valley. Those in search of New Richmond apartments for rent should enjoy Wisconsin weather, old buildings and wooded landscapes.

This historic town was originally settled by the lumber industry, but transitioned into an agricultural village as timber resources became limited. This city has a dark spot in its history: In 1899, just as the city's downtown businesses were beginning to thrive, a massive tornado swept through New Richmond, killing 117 residents and ruining more than 200 original buildings. Nonetheless, the city rebuilt itself and carried its pioneering spirit through the 20th century. It has continued to grow in recent years, and the city's population grew by 32.7 percent between 2000 and 2010.

New Richmond residents enjoy strolling or driving down the city's main street, where numerous retail and service businesses set up shop. New Richmond is typical of many modern American small towns: It provides insight into the past while preparing for the future.

Because of its semi-rural location, New Richmond is home to numerous recreational and natural facilities. Outdoor skating rinks, numerous parks, hiking and biking trails, and a first-rate golf course provide exercise and entertainment for residents and visitors.
