Overview of Sheboygan

Sheboygan apartments for rent can be found along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan. Sheboygan, nicknamed and known as "the spirit on the lake," sits along the shore at the mouth of the Sheboygan River, roughly 55 miles north of Milwaukee and 60 miles south of Green Bay.

While the Sheboygan River is non-navigable due to waterfalls located upstream at the Sheboygan Falls, Lake Michigan is a significant draw to the area. Many people come to Sheboygan to take advantage of lakeside recreation such as surfing, sailing, kayaking, skiing, boating, fishing, hiking and golfing.

Sheboygan is known for its food, namely the bratwurst, and the city is officially the Bratwurst Capital of the World. Whether drawn to Sheboygan for the bratwurst and other culinary delights, its lakeside beaches, prime recreational activities or one of the many other draws to the city, the town of roughly 50,000 has a lot to offer.

Living in Sheboygan, WI

While there are many circulating theories on the origin of Sheboygan's name, most people believe it came from a Chippewa Indian word that meant "passage or waterway between the lakes," according to the city of Sheboygan. The area was discovered as early as 1635 by French explorers, but the first visit wasn't recorded until 1814. The town began undergoing developments in the 1840s and 1850s and Sheboygan was officially chartered in 1853.

When Sheboygan was first founded, the population in 1849 sat at somewhere between 700 and 1,000 people. Today, the Sheboygan population has grown to nearly 50,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau as of July 2011. Sheboygan apartments for rent can be found across the 13.97 square miles that the city encompasses.

French Automotive Castings.
